Piece of Tel Aviv

My story with
Tel Aviv
is a love story
The puzzle that connects Tel Aviv, piece by piece – “A Tel Avivian Piece” is much more than a 1000-piece puzzle. It is a mosaic of love for places and stories in a city that I live and breathe nonstop between the seashore and the wide boulevards and the hidden corners.
I love to walk around it or just sit and observe it and it moves me every time. Tel Aviv, the only city in the world that was built from a fictional book but the reality in it surpasses all imagination.
Tel Aviv, “the first Hebrew city”, the city that most fully embodied the Zionist spirit of cultural life and human freedom of constant, vibrant and diverse renewal. Which became the subject of the writing of writers and poets, a city of passions and creativity and, as Nathan Alterman defined it, “there are more beautiful than it but none as beautiful as it.” A city that has an elusive, everyday and unexpected aesthetic – one that you discover when you put it together
piece by piece. “A Piece of Tel Aviv” was born from the desire to invite you to observe, discover, and fall in love.
If assembling the puzzle has aroused your curiosity – I invite you to join me on a true Tel Aviv trip: a walking tour, full of stories, flavors, perspectives, and small-large beauty hidden in every corner. And also to scan me – because there you can discover the story behind every corner. Waiting for you – between the pieces and between the streets.
With love,
Michal Sasson Bibi

Tel Aviv Beach
The sea is the mirror of the city. She looks at it — The rush – turns into a crashing wave, The noise – into the sound of the waves, The rush – dissolves into the horizon, And thoughts – are washed away into the depths. When the city wakes up, She arranges her hair, Blinks at the sun — And waits… You can simply sit on a bench in front of the sea, And let it tell the story of the city.Shalom Meir Tower
When Tel Aviv began to rise
When it was built, you could see it from every corner.
It was the first, tall, unique and special in the landscape of houses of little Tel Aviv.
The gymnasium was destroyed,
and every time I meet a group of tourists — they demand to understand the reason.
Whoever goes inside
will be able to discover — not everything is gone. The past still lives between the walls.
And the surrounding towers are so tall.
They look at the Shalom Tower and turn up their noses.
The first kiosk – a refreshing drink with a taste of longing
The building was small, but a great storm surrounded it:
Would it corrupt morals? Would it encourage extravagance?
And yet — it stood.
In its center was a single sparkling tap,
and a colorful liquid flavored with strawberry, lemon… or peach,
which was poured into a clear glass cup
and in an instant became everyone’s passion.
Thus began an urban custom
that flows through the veins of Tel Aviv to this day.
Years passed, the gezoz was replaced by upside-down coffee.
And the kiosk? -still here-on every corner.
And every cup—has a story.
Independence Hall – the house where a state was born
Friday, 5th of Iyar 5758.
Four in the afternoon.
In the small hall in the center of the avenue,
one could imagine —
a whole nation gathered.
“This is the State of Israel” —
the words were spoken,
writing a great moment in history.
The whole nation shed a tear.
Applause.
“Hatikva” was sung.
And the State of Israel —
was a fact.
City Hall
This is what a city hall once looked like –
in all seriousness, and with a lot of style:
Ceremonies in the courtyard, discussions behind wooden doors,
A line for taxes that wound all the way to the entrance.
In the house that stands at the end of Bialik Street
Decisions were made that shaped the city:
It was the editorial office of Little Tel Aviv.
Want to feel what it was like?
Enter the old city hall building —
Today it is a museum.
Open a door, wander through the rooms,
and discover the little stories
from which Tel Aviv was built.
Tel Aviv Cinematheque
At the Cinematheque – When the lights go out — the story begins.
At the Cinematheque, as in the city,
there is room for everyone.
Both invite us to stop for a moment,
and look at things
with a new perspective.
Because sometimes, precisely in the dark —
the picture becomes clearer.
When the lights come on and the door opens —
it’s hard to know whether we’re leaving the movie,
or simply entering the next scene.
Culture Square – Habima
In the heart of Tel Aviv, between Sderot,
the cultural buildings have lined up:
the theater, the Philharmonic, the museum,
and a square between them — part of the picture,
but always leaving room for the next scene.
Here you walk, sit, drink coffee,
and wait for the moment when the lights go out —
because the show is starting.
And sometimes, even without a show —
there is quite a bit of drama here.
Because culture in Tel Aviv doesn’t end with the screen.
Sometimes, it even begins after it.
Culture Square
Dusk… In the center of the square is a sunken plaza manicured with ornamental flowers and wild plants, a tribute to the Tel Aviv agricultural-educational farm that once stood here.
Children with their parents run around its edges and in it. Boys on bicycles check out ‘angles and slopes,’ neatly dressed people cross it on their way to a theater performance. On the boulevard opposite, young people drink beer at makeshift tables.
I watch the hustle and bustle, and feel how the peace envelops me.
